(S)C.R.E.A.M – (South) Carolina Requires Education About Money
Have you ever wondered why schools don’t offer financial literacy programs? Me too, on a daily basis. I strongly believe that we as a people and as a nation would heavily benefit from financial literacy programs, and we should start in elementary school. We make decisions daily based on practical money math, checking and savings account statuses in addition to yearly plans based on our tax brackets and expectations. If Cash.Rules.Everything.Around.Me (it does), and the world is run by capitalism (it is), why aren’t we being armed with the knowledge to be the best employees, employers and business owners? Why THE FUCK isn’t something so elementary, being taught to the future of tomorrow? Generations could actually be prepared for their futures in areas of their life that actually matter. Could you imagine the implications?
Well… The good news is that Luke Rankin, a South Carolina lawmaker and Horry County Senator, has pre-filed a bill that would mandate high school students to take a personal finance class. This class would be made up of daily life tasks such as: taxes, budgeting, banking, how to keep your debt in check, insurance, and planning retirement. Now that makes cents! (see what I did there?)
If passed, this bill would require students to take a test at the end of the year before graduation and would go into effect during the 2020-2021 school year!
This is only for South Carolina right now, but it’s a start in the right direction and is definitely an initiative that adds up.
Shout Out to Luke Rankin for this!
